The Monsters Inside The Closet

Hi
My name is Manal
And when I was a kid
I was scared of 
the monsters 
Monsters under my bed 
or inside my closet
And when I grew up
like everybody
I stopped believing in monsters

And that was…
a MISTAKE
because later
I realized
monsters inside the closet 
do EXIST

Yep
but they're not the typical 
furry big teeth 
scary monsters 
that you know 

These monsters hide so well
you can barely notice them
they don’t make a sound 
but to get into your closet 
they cause a lot of harm

The Fast fashion industry 

These monsters 
have basically 
a new season 
EVERY WEEK 
So people keep buying 
this
this 
and this 

And in order to produce 
such a huge quantity 
of items
The Fast fashion industry 
poisons so many things
like this
this 
and even this 

Can you believe 
that Fast Fashion is the second 
most polluting industry 
right after the oil industry
That’s INSANE

yeah
And that’s why
we have more of 
this 
and this 

Not to mention
they're not being 
nice to people 
their workers
they don’t respect 
their rights as HUMANS 
And sometimes they even 
make children work,

even though they say 
they’re against child labor 

and unfortunately
sometimes it's a matter 
of life 
or death 
 
The worst thing about 
all of this
is that we’re giving 
our own money
to these monsters
to do all of this 
And that’s how they get 
bigger 
and STRONGER 

Monsters are scary
And fighting them 
is not always easy 
but 
If we want to defeat them
we need to look at them 
straight in the eyes 

But how?

First 
we can start talking about 
these monsters inside our closets
and expose them 
all together
because if you know 
about them, 
perhaps your bestie 
has no idea! 

Remember…
awareness is the first step to 
CHANGE

Second 
we can kick them in the ***
by stopping giving them
our money 

of course 
it’s not that easy
because these monsters
are very…
let’s say...
bewitching
so breaking that spell
could be a little bit hard
trust me
I’ve been there

But here's the thing
nobody is asking you 
to STOP 
shopping 

Oh…
so…
what’s your point then?

Well, just ask yourself this 
before going on a shopping spree:
Do I need one more pair of shoes 
Do I need one more pair of jeans 
to put inside my closet
something I will probably wear
once or twice
before selling it
or throwing it

Do I really need more stuff? 
or 
am I just bored?

You’d be surprised 
by the answer
just like I was 

And finally 
you can replace these monsters 
with more FRIENDLY creatures 
Like this 
or this 

See, no matter how scary 
these monsters are
In the end 
they can’t survive without us
because they’re not in charge 
of our closets 
WE ARE

And that’s why 
we can make these monsters 
smaller 

weaker 
 
So yeah
Fashion and Compassion 
can go together
but 
until these monsters 
learn how to behave
like empowering workers
respecting human rights 
and protecting our home
planet EARTH

We need to stop ASKING 
why sustainable and ethical 
clothing brands 
are so expensive 
and start ASKING 
why everything else 
is so CHEAP
 
So there will come a day 
where no kid will be 
mistreated 
no place will be poisoned  
and no life 
will be taken away  
because of the monsters
of the monsters 
inside our closets
