You can read us right below!
Is it me or has the word privilege become even worse than the F-word?
Think about this:
Years ago
it was impossible for people to say in public some words
like
Abortion
Gay community
Sexual identity
Transgender
without arguing, passionately
and sometimes too passionately
Because for some, these words are unfortunately a taboo.
But what does it have to do with privilege? right?
Well, a few weeks ago,
we published a video about privilege,
and we received a lot of supporting comments
from you guys. Thank you so much!
And at the same time,
there was a heatwave coming, that we needed to manage after that video was online
HATE MESSAGES
Or... should I say a misconception of what the video is about,
expressed in a violent way by some of the viewers.
We know people don’t think the same
Everyone has the right to their opinion
in a respectful way of coure
But talking about Privilege triggered a lot of negative reactions,
that in a way...surprised us.
Basically, we tried to raise awareness about the fact that
sometimes we don’t see privilege
simply because this or this is not a problem for us
So we asked a bunch of viewers why they don’t agree
Some left us some very “passionate” DM’s
while others tried to explain a different point of view.
Everyone has the same opportunity, some people are just lazy
There are more important issues you should talk about.
It’s the way the universe works, let it do its job!
Except that actually
the universe doesn’t care about your passport,
because it doesn’t even have borders
the universe doesn’t give clothes, food, education only to him and not him
the universe, doesn't give different opportunities based on where you’re born
That’s not the universe
That’s us.
That’s our society,
the universe, we’ve created
A universe that cares too much about material things.
A universe where too often, profit comes before people.
It’s easier to blame everything on the universe instead of facing the ugly truth.
So hear me out :
Do you honestly believe that all human beings on this planet are treated equally?
Do you honestly believe that all people around the world fully enjoy human rights?
If your answer to this is yes. Please… Think again!!
Otherwise, you just understood what privilege means.
We’re talking about privilege because we have underprivileged people in our society. The universe we’ve created
So by denying the existence of privilege,
we’re also denying the existence of many people who are struggling and suffering because of it..
And that’s not fair,
not fair to those people
not fair to our children
not fair to the future generations
and not fair to our species.
privileged guy: So Being privileged doesn’t make me a bad guy?
Absolutely not :)
When we talk about privilege,
it’s to point out at what people should have in their lives
no matter who they are, where they were born,
where they live, what they believe in, how they look like, or who they choose to love…
Everybody should be able
To travel without being rejected because of their nationality,
To go to college because of will and worth, and not because of wealth
To work in a place where people are rewarded and not exploited
To enjoy human rights, like every human should
Privilege is not a curse word
So when we talk about it
it’s not to insult anybody
it’s not to make anyone feel guilty
And it’s definitely not to say that one is having it easy
or not working hard to live decently
it’s just not the point.
it’s actually about us becoming more aware
of those who don’t have any opportunity,
no matter how hard they try to change their lives
because the universe we’ve created
piece by piece
is taking away from them any chance to grow and do better
That’s why Acknowledging privilege is the first step to change
So let’s untaboo that
Because in the end
the real Universe
that we all belong to,
belongs to all of us.
So here’s the thing,
if today the LGBTQ+ have more rights than they used to
If we know so much more about the human sexuality
and if we can talk about pro life or pro choice, it’s because years ago,
someone opened that door for us.
Someone put people in an uncomfortable chair and said
hey, this is important! We need to talk and do something about it
and that goes for privilege too
Awkwardness, denial, or resistance,
could be quite normal reactions at first
but it’s important to get over them,
and start talking about fair wages, equal pay,
black lives matter, extreme poverty, passport colors...
because privilege comes in so many shapes that we don’t even realize sometimes.
So it’s our responsibility as human beings to do something about it
so we can in our turn open the door
for those who are left behind
and the generations to come
just like others had opened doors for us.
So that one day,
no one will have to deal with a taboo called privilege
and the universe we create tomorrow is more equal for all
no privileged
and no underprivileged.
Just humans
as we are.
Coconutly,
Thanks for watching,
